About Eastern Michigan University

Eastern Michigan University, or EMU for short, is a comprehensive, co-educational public university located in Ypsilanti, which is a city in Washtenaw County, in the U.S. state of Michigan, with a population of more than 22 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2000 census. Ypsilanti is situated 6 miles east of Ann Arbor, and it is bounded on the west, south, and east by the Charter Township of Ypsilanti, and by the Charter Township of Superior, to the north.


Eastern Michigan University was founded in 1849, first starting as Michigan State Normal School, the 1st normal school created in Michigan, as well as the first institution of its kind created outside the original 13 colonies. Eastern Michigan had its name changed several times over the years, becoming known as Michigan State Normal College, in 1899 and Eastern Michigan College, in 1956, adopting its current name in 1959.


The university has an enrollment of approximately 17 000 undergraduate and 5000 graduate students, to whom it offers degreed and educational programs at master's, bachelor's, specialist's and doctoral levels, the undergraduate students having more than 200 majors and minors, to select from, while the graduate students have 170 programs to choose from. All the programs are offered through 5 colleges, which are: Arts & Sciences, Education, Business, Health & Human Services and Technology, including a Graduate School.


The athletic teams from EMU are known as the Eastern Michigan Eagles, who compete in the NCAA, in various sports, including in baseball, cross country, swimming and diving. The Eagles have been successful on a national level, in many of their sports, having won 3 NCAA Division II national championships and 13 NAIA Division I national championships, in 5 different sports, including in the ones reminded above, plus in men's indoor track and field, and men's outdoor track and field.
